The state House gave its’ support today Thursday for Governor Deal’s push to expand the Georgia Supreme Court by two justices. Under the legislation, the state Supreme Court would expand from seven to nine justices.

The bill also makes other changes, including how the Supreme Court and the State Court of Appeals divvy up cases. The bill’s sponsor is state representative Christian Coomer.

“This bill is not a legislative hot dog. It is a legislative plate of vegetables. It’s not very exciting but it’s very important.”

Coomer believes expanding the Supreme Court will also allow the justices to spend more time hearing important cases. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.
