UPDATE: 1/25/16 10:00 a.m.The snow has moved out, but temperatures remain below freezing in North Georgia. Several school systems cancelled classes today, or have delayed opening due to slick roads.

Forecasters say the highest elevations saw up to eight inches of snow over the weekend. The mountains could see more winter precipitation later this week.

UPDATE: 1/24/16 9:24 a.m. Utilities had restored power to more than 66,000 customers since the storm began there early Friday. Georgia Power says about 700 customers remain without power as of Sunday morning.

Temperatures remain below freezing in much of the state. The National Weather Service reminds drivers to watch out for slick spots and black ice on bridges and overpasses.

DeKalb county officials say a postal worker died Saturday, after a tree uprooted by gusty winds fell on the worker's vehicle.

UPDATE:The National Weather Service has updated its snow and ice totals. Communities in the northeast, including Blairsville and Dahlonega, will see the most snow accumulation. Forecasters say Saturday will be windy, 35 mile per hour gusts possible in much of the state.

Snow is already falling in North Georgia, and more is on the way later in the day. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Saturday morning for 21 northern counties.

Forecasters say 2-4 inches of snow are likely, with up to eight inches in higher elevations. The Atlanta area could see about an inch, starting this afternoon and into tomorrow morning.

State offices closed at noon. Atlanta city government offices closed at 11 a.m. Many school systems in the north and Metro Atlanta have canceled classes or are dismissing early. In a statement released Friday morning, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed asked private employers in the city to let employees go home at 2 p.m. Reed and the Georgia Department of Transportation urged motorists to stay off roads between 3 and 6 p.m. so crews can treat roadways with brine, salt, and gravel.

Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms are possible across much of Middle and South Georgia today.
