As hype builds over the Powerball Lottery, Georgians are ramping up for the next drawing on Wednesday. The jackpot might be enticing, but it’s not all its chalked up to be.

So what would you do if you won over a billion dollars?

“If it was my lucky day, I will fully fund my business, take some time off as well. Spend some time with and try and figure out something to make the world a better place”

That’s Atlantan Josh Stover, who says he’s bought ten lottery tickets already. But, let’s be honest, we would all buy something.

“I would probably buy a vacation home in every cool place around the world," says Stover.

As the Powerball lottery reaches one point four billion dollars for Wednesday’s drawing, the odds of winning the jackpot rise to one in nearly three-hundred million.

But, even if you did score the big prize, you’d have trouble holding on to all of it.

After taxes, only about eight hundred million dollars of that money would actually be handed out.

According to a study by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, one third of lottery winners eventually go bankrupt. The reason?

Overspending, hand-outs, and crime-related mischief have been the most consistent villains. That’s according to business magazine Forbes, which recommends that any winners take serious precautions, such as signing their ticket and hiding it.

Then wait a few months before accepting the money, and hire a financial professional to help handle all that cash.
