The flooding felt across the state from recent heavy rains isn't over, but emergency management officials are already focused on the recovery process.

Jim Butterworth directs the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security (GEMA/HS). He says the recovery process has already started on the local level.

"At the moment, most of the impact is being handled at the county level, and we're just continuing to communicate with them and look for opportunities to support them," he says.

Butterworth says GEMA/HS is prepared to further assist in local recovery efforts as floodwaters recede, something he expects to happen later this week. At that point, officials will be able to fully assess the damage from recent heavy rains.

As of Monday afternoon, GEMA/HS had declared states of emergency in three north Georgia counties.
