Eutis Morris and his ceremonial brick at SunTrust Park, the future home of the Atlanta Braves.

Eutis Morris lay the first ceremonial brick at the new Braves stadium with an experienced, wrinkled hand.

He’s had practice with this kind of thing. He put down the first brick at Atlanta’s Olympic Stadium, which later became Turner Field. He also helped lay some of the first concrete blocks at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.

He says not much has changed in his time as a bricklayer. “You use the same tools and the same skills,” he says. “Same thing as it was back in ‘65.”

The Braves have been on the move around the city in the time since. SunTrust Park in Cobb County will be the team’s third home since they came to Atlanta in 1966.

The move to the new park has been bumpy. Last year, three Cobb residents sued the county over the $397 million in bonds issued to help pay for the stadium construction. The case made it all the way to the state Supreme Court, which ruled the bonds were legal.

Still, Morris says he’s happy to see the Braves getting a new home. “I’m sure they will have a good home for a long time,” he says.

A long time? Maybe. The team has agreed to lease the stadium from Cobb County for at least the next 30 years.
