For black women, a hairstyle is often about more than fashion or aesthetics. Hair can be a political statement, or as stylist Shawntel Waajid explains, a way to define identity. She tells GPB's Emily Jones why many women are choosing natural hair over weaves and chemical straighteners.

Waajid has been braiding hair for more than three decades - since she was seven years old. She owns The Nappy Hutt, a natural hair care salon in Savannah, and instructs other stylists in natural hair care.
