Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he wants a specialty license plate the state offers featuring the Confederate flag redesigned, after initially telling reporters he wouldn't urge changes.

The license plate features a full Confederate flag and a smaller version included in the organization's logo.

Deal told reporters he wouldn't urge lawmakers to take any action on the plate. Then at a second interview in his office requested by Deal's staff, he backed a redesign and said it can be completed without lawmakers' action.

In a statement issued later, the Gov. Deal said, "“As I have said before, many interest groups in Georgia are able to express personal views on specialty plates, and I support the ability of these groups, including the Sons of Confederate Veterans, to express their views. I have tried to govern as a consensus builder, and I believe we can reach a resolution agreeable to all sides through a redesign of the plate.

Deal said specifics will be discussed with the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization and other groups. State officials estimate 3,500 drivers have the plate on their vehicles.
