Chatham County Sheriff

Chatham County jail officials say tasers were used at the jail far less often last year than they initially thought. The Savannah Morning News reports the Sheriff’s office now estimates officers used tasers in 64 cases in 2014.

The initial estimate was 195.

Officials tell the paper the error lies in how use-of-force incidents are reported. Officers fill out a form that asks if a taser was present - and a computer counted every “yes” answer in the original taser count.

But on further review officials found many officers wrote that a taser was present but wasn’t used.

The paper reviewed taser use at the Chatham County Detention Center following the death of Matthew Ajibade at the jail in January. A taser was used on him at some point. His death has been ruled a homicide.
