Savannah clergy members are calling for residents to participate in what’s being called Census Awareness Sunday. Healing Communities of Georgia, a group comprised of religious leaders met on the steps of the Savannah Civic Center Wednesday to promote the event.

The 2020 census will be the first one offered online. Thurmond Tillman, a census partnership specialist ,encouraged pastors to tell their congregations about the 2015 census test, and why he believes its important to fill it out.

“Only ten percent of the population within the population area will receive and actual paper form. Everyone else just go online to Census.gov/2015 and it’s there,” he informed.

Healing communities of Georgia works to help formerly incarcerated people assimilate back into the community. According to Tillman, an accurate census count will help ensure that the region is fairly represented in Congress.

Census officials selected Savannah and surrounding areas as a test location because its economic and racial demographics are said to mirror the US.
