Tybee Island

Researchers looking at trash on the beaches of coastal Georgia say there's plenty of garbage washing ashore even on secluded, undeveloped islands.

A study by the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography looked at trash collections reported by conservation groups that routinely pick up litter on Georgia beaches.

They reported hauling off up to 5,400 pounds of plastic bottles, wrappers and other trash on Tybee Island, Georgia's largest public beach.

But remote, protected beaches such as Blackbeard Island, Ossabaw Island and Cumberland Island also had their share of garbage-- from nearly 400 to over 11 hundred pounds.
