Arthur Blank greets new Falcon head coach Dan Quinn

The Atlanta Falcons have announced that Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will be the team's next coach. Quinn was introduced at a news conference Tuesday.

He replaces Mike Smith, who was fired following a 6-10 finish in 2014.

During the news conference, Quinn praised Falcon fans.

"I know we have an extremely passionate fan base here in Atlanta," he said. "The brand of football we're going to play is going to be fast and physical."

He also thanked the Falcons team for their patience as he could not be offered a job until after Seattle's 28-24 Super Bowl loss Sunday night to the New England Patriots.

A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press earlier Monday that Quinn agreed to a five-year deal.

The 44-year-old Quinn helped Seattle reach back-to-back Super Bowls. Seattle beat Denver in last year's championship.

In addition to a poor season, the Atlanta Falcons have come under the NFL's scrutiny. The league is trying to determine if the team pumped fake crowd noise into the Georgia Dome for home games the last two years.

Team spokesman Reggie Roberts says the team has "cooperated fully" after being informed during the season of the league's investigation.
