The police chief in Peachtree City is on administrative leave, as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation looks into whether the shooting of his wife was an accident.

Chief William McCollom called 911 around 4 a.m. New Year's Day to say he'd accidentally shot his wife, Margaret. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"The department's hurting at this point. We're very concerned for obviously his wife,” Lt. Mark Brown said in a press conference Thursday. “We're concerned for the Chief. And right now we're just trying to make sure everything is done correctly as far as the investigation and take care of things internally, and with his family and with her family."

A GBI spokeswoman says McCollom is cooperating with their investigation.

The Fayette County District Attorney says it is too soon to tell if any charges will be filed.

"Certainly the GBI has taken an open mind. And the police department has been incredibly cooperative with them as they gather the facts that they need,” DA Scott Ballard said. “When we have all of those facts, we'll sit down and see whether it's appropriate to bring charges or not."

UPDATE: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has obtained audio of McCollom's call to 911.
