Warrior's Walk

A Georgia Army post's living memorial to more than 460 fallen soldiers has been rebuilt from the soil to the tops of its freshly planted trees.

Since 2003, Fort Stewart has planted a tree for each of its soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the memorial known as Warriors Walk wasn't lasting. Bugs and disease were killing 40 or more of its 468 eastern redbud trees each year. Commanders finally decided to replace all of them with a hardier tree species.

Months of work finished Dec. 1. Now dozens of families are coming to see the new Warriors Walk, where white crape myrtles have replaced the redbuds trees.

The old trees will be burned at a ceremony Friday night. Holiday wreathes will be placed at each new tree Saturday.
