Some Jekyll Island residents say they're upset with island officials discussing ending home mail delivery with the U.S. Postal Service.

The Florida Times-Union reports the Jekyll Island Authority's attorney, Chris O'Donnell, told members of the island's citizens association Monday that the USPS looking to cut expenses means they could potentially lose their post office.

Association member Bonnie Newell says decisions on postal services are supposed to be made by residents of the resort island, not the authority. Newell says laws prevent the USPS from cutting service without consent from island residents.

O'Donnell says the authority is trying to strike a deal because pending federal legislation would give the USPS authority to cut home delivery service at its discretion, which could leave the island without delivery and a post office.
