Three separate Bibb County organizations have submitted petitions with the new State Charter School Commission of Georgia, forming the biggest cluster of new school proposals outside of the Atlanta area.

Last year, voters across Georgia expanded the state’s authority to approve charters — even ones that have been rejected by local boards of education. June 14 was the deadline for the first round of petitions and 16 came in statewide.

GPB spoke with the organizers behind all three Bibb County proposals (click audio link to the left), and acquired their complete petitions via open records request: The Academy for Classical Education, Cirrus Academy Charter School, and St. Augustine Preparatory Academy of Excellence.

Commissioners will vote to approve or deny the proposals at their meeting October 30.
