The head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is promising the watchdog agency will monitor a new nuclear plant under construction in Georgia.

NRC Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane toured Plant Vogtle on Friday.

She said the nuclear safety agency will monitor the two existing reactors at the site as well as those being built as part of the roughly $15 billion project. Macfarlane says the agency has a good "working relationship" with Atlanta-based Southern Company, which runs the plant.

Macfarlane was joined on the tour by Democratic Rep. John Barrow, who said the reactors will provide electricity that allows for economic growth in the decades to come.

A plant based on the same design is currently under construction in South Carolina.
