Twiggs County Sheriff Darren Mitchum has fired two guards who were on duty when an inmate escaped the county jail through a hole he's accused of making in a shower wall.

Sheriff Darren Mitchum says he's dismissed two guards who should have been doing hourly cell block checks and didn't when inmate Tony Criswell escaped Saturday night.

Authorities have said Criswell was able to rip out a shower head and create a hole large enough for him to slip through. He climbed a fence to escape Saturday night and spent three days on the run.

Mitchum says there's no evidence that the two guards helped Criswell escape in any way. The sheriff says they were dismissed because of their failure to follow the jail's security protocols.
