Georgia Rep. Sanford Bishop has created a legal expense fund.

Trustee Amy Gilbert filed paperwork on April 1 to create the "Sanford Bishop Legal Expense Trust." Gilbert referred inquiries to Bishop's office, which did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The fund lists its purpose in federal records as to "defray legal fees and other expenses" as allowed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Campaign finance records show Bishop has spent more than $75,000 in legal fees in the last two years.

Bishop is a Democrat who represents southwest Georgia.

The creation of the legal defense fund was first reported by Roll Call.
