Organizers of an animal shelter in southern Georgia say many pit bull owners are parting ways with their dogs in the wake of a new county ordinance.

Of the 32 dogs currently being housed in the Terrell County shelter, about 28 of them are pit bulls.

A county ordinance requires pit bull owners to purchase a $100,000 insurance policy, among other things, after several attacks involving pit bulls earlier this year.

Officials said more people have abandoned their pit bulls and left them to roam the streets as well.

Shelter officials said they're trying to hold the abandoned dogs for as long as possible, but add that some of them may eventually be euthanized.

Dawson is about 25 miles outside of Albany.
