A 16-year-old high school student in central Georgia has been suspended after authorities misinterpreted a comment he posted on Facebook foreshadowing a holiday surprise for his classmates.

The teen planned to don a Santa Claus costume and hand out candy to his classmates at Crawford County High School. Officials say a concerned parent called police after reading the teen's Facebook post about Crawford students being "in for a big surprise tomorrow."

Police investigated and say they found no wrongdoing. However, the school has suspended the teen indefinitely and will hold a hearing on the issue after the holiday vacation.

School officials told the newspaper they were exercising necessary precaution following the school shooting in Connecticut. The boy's father says the punishment is embarrassing and unfair.
