Authorities say at least 10 people and two dogs have been exposed to rabies after contact with a rabid cat in the Savannah area.

Authorities in Chatham County say a rabid cat has bitten or scratched 9 people and two dogs.

WTOC-TV Thursday reported the feral cat bit at least one person and scratched others before being reported to animal control on Nov. 28.

Officials say the cat was quarantined, tested positive for rabies and died at the animal shelter.

Authorities say the pet dogs that came into contact with the cat have been vaccinated. They'll be quarantined and monitored for 45 days.

Officials at the Environmental Health Department say people who made contact with the cat were treated and vaccinated, but no one was hospitalized.

Authorities say people should never touch, feed or handle unfamiliar animals.
