The director of a juvenile detention facility in Augusta has submitted his resignation.

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice said Wednesday that former director Ronald Brawner's resignation is effective Nov. 15. He is on leave until that date.

The department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation continue to probe an escape by five youths earlier this month from the Augusta Youth Development Campus.

The facility's assistant director of security, Melvin Womble, has been named acting director, effective immediately. In that role he has full authority to manage day-to-day operations.

The department commissioner's office says that high-ranking central office officials will continue to oversee operations at the Augusta facility and will provide onsite support until a new director is named.
