Georgia is making it easier for military children to enroll in a new school when their parents move between states.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed an interstate compact Wednesday during a visit to Fort Benning. Georgia is now one of 42 states to agree to the compact created by the Kentucky-based Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission.

Children in military families typically attend up to nine different school systems before they graduate high school. That can mean delays in their education because of the red tape involved in transferring schools.

It can also mean the children don't qualify for sports or clubs for long periods of time and lack consistency in their classes.

The law aims to ensure that military children are not "placed at a disadvantage."
