Water barrels decorated by artists are being auctioned off in Athens as a way to raise money and promote water conservation efforts.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that the rain barrels can help fight drought by catching rainwater to use on lawns or gardens.

The fundraiser, known as "Roll Out the Barrels" began Friday with an event at Terrapin Brewery in Athens. Athens-Clarke County is auctioning off 20 of the rain barrels over the next two weeks.

Water Conservation Coordinator Marilyn Hall said 30 percent of the funds raised will go to the artists to cover the cost of supplies. The rest of the money will go to the Athens Green Schools program, a partnership involving several local groups
