Fort Stewart's top general and his command staff of about 700 soldiers have received orders to deploy to Afghanistan by late summer.

Officials at the southeast Georgia Army post said Thursday that commander Maj. Gen. Robert A. Abrams and his headquarters battalion from the 3rd Infantry Division are expected to deploy in August. They will spend a year overseeing one of the military's four regional commands in Afghanistan.

It's the second time this month the Pentagon has tapped Fort Stewart units for deployments to Afghanistan. The Army announced two weeks ago that it's sending 1,500 troops from Fort Stewart's 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team overseas between February and April.

After multiple tours in Iraq since 2003, this is the Fort Stewart division's ground units have face deploying to Afghanistan.
