Two Georgia lawmakers are planning to introduce legislation that would require people to pass a drug test to receive welfare.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that state Rep. Jason Spencer, R-Woodbine, and state Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, said they hope lawmakers consider the plan next year.

Spencer said he wants to make sure "hard-earned tax dollars are not being used to subsidize drug addiction." He said the measure would not apply to people on food stamps or other public assistance.

Similar laws have run into legal problems in other states. A federal judge in Florida last week temporarily halted a law requiring all welfare recipients to pass drug tests.

Spencer said he addressed constitutional concerns by banning state authorities from handing over test results to authorities.
