Almost a year has passed since a Macon hotel began opening its doors to homeless veterans.

The River View Hotel began letting vets stay for free last November.

Now, veterans pay to stay using public assistance vouchers and make up the difference with their own funds.

Owner, Edward Grant Jr. was inspired by his father who was also a war veteran.

“What we’ve decided to do is to commit 35 of our rooms along with a partnership with the VA in Dublin, the Department of Community Affairs, and the Macon Housing Authority, to try to house some of the veterans that are experiencing homelessness" says Grant.

The hotel also helps veterans get benefits they didn’t know they qualified for.

The Macon community will be invited to have lunch with the veterans on Veterans Day.
