Worshippers filled Savannah's Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as the Catholic church ordained a new bishop in a solemn ceremony.

Father Gregory Hartmayer was ordained leader of the 90-county Savannah Diocese, including 77,000 Catholics south of Atlanta.

Nineteen bishops, including one from Ireland, attended the ceremony in the port city known for its large population of Irish decent.

The ordination also included prayers in Spanish for the Diocese' large immigrant population.
