Thousands of educators and community leaders gathered in Macon Monday to reshape the Bibb County Public School system. Plans include some potential “firsts” for Georgia education.

People met in small groups to look at possible solutions. Ideas include; year-round school, teaching Mandarin Chinese, increased technology and building dormitories for homeless students.

Last year more than 700 kids dropped out of school in Bibb County while 8-thousand of the 25-thousand enrolled were suspended. The system’s new Superintendent Romain Dallemand says big changes are needed.

“Tweaking the system is not what’s going to get us to where we need to be. So, we need fundamental change. We need a new system and my goal is to create a new school district.”

Information from the meeting will go into a final plan expected by January. Changes could take effect by next fall.
