The University of Georgia is expecting a record number of freshmen this fall.

UGA officials said Monday that more than 5,000 freshmen are anticipated on campus when classes start next week. That's a 10 percent increase over last year.

It's also the largest number of Georgia residents enrolled at the university — one in 20 Georgia high school graduates will attend UGA this year.

Nearly 18,000 students applied to be freshmen this year. Since 2003, the number of students applying to be freshmen at UGA has increase more than 50 percent.

The freshmen class will include nearly 500 black students and 300 Hispanic students.

The average SAT score for entering freshmen is 1860 out of 2400. The average ACT score is 28 out of 36.
