The city of Columbus has put together a special task force aimed at cracking-down on copper thieves.

The group includes representatives of the city's three law enforcement agencies, local real estate managers and developers, and president of a scrap metal recycling company.

Like in many communities, metal thieves in west Georgia have been targeting air conditioning units, electrical wiring and piping.

The price of copper has dropped somewhat over the past two months, but remains about $4 a pound.
