State and federal environmental officials are looking into a fish kill on a 35 to 40 mile stretch of the Ogeechee River in Screven and Bulloch counties.

Officials say testing conducted over the past three days has not identified a cause for the kill and the investigation is ongoing.

They say that until the cause of the kill is determined, citizens are advised to avoid swimming or consuming fish taken from the Ogeechee in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Screven counties.

The state Environmental Protection Division says it will issue further guidance as soon as test results become available.
