College students in Georgia likely will see a tuition increase again this year.

University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll Davis told state lawmakers Thursday that he expects a "rather substantial shortfall" for the state's 35 colleges and universities. He said tuition hikes and program cuts are the only way to make up that difference.

Davis declined to give a specific number for a tuition increase because lawmakers have not yet passed the fiscal year 2012 budget. Enrollment in the university system has shot up by more than 100,000 students over the last decade while state support has dwindled.
