Officials at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta have temporarily suspended elective surgeries.

That’s after it was discovered last week that a sterilization procedure wasn’t followed correctly.

A tray of surgical equipment was labeled out of sequence while on its way through a sterilization process.

Officials decided to halt elective surgeries in order to re-sterilize all reusable surgical instruments.

Officials say no one was in danger and that all emergency surgery is proceeding as usual.

The incident comes two years after thousands of patients were potentially exposed to infection because of improper equipment sterilization at the facility.
