Recycle Thanksgiving Cooking Grease

Savannah officials are urging residents to recycle an unwanted portion of their Thanksgiving leftovers - the cooking grease.

The city will have workers standing by Monday at Savannah's recycling complex to take in sealed containers of oils and fats used to prepare holiday feasts.

The recycling push is meant to discourage Savannah residents from disposing of cooking grease by pouring it down their sinks. City officials say that can clog pipes and sewer lines and lead to sewage spilling and backing up into homes.

Savannah estimates improperly discarded grease accounts for 70 percent of sewer blockages in the city, which tend to increase during the holidays.
