A Robot that gives Sponge baths has gotten a lot of attention after Researchers at Georgia Tech posted a video of the procedure on line. The invention is part of Techs venture into health care robots.

Charley Kemp and his team presented a paper on the sponge bath robot named Cody a few weeks ago but only after people saw it in action did they take notice. He says a real world application of such a robot is still year away, but its need is there with an aging population.

“We’ve really spend a lot of time looking for task that would be very helpful to people Hygiene is really one of those priority tasks that could make a lot of difference for a lot of people.”

Kemp says until now most robots were kept away from people because of danger. The trick is to make robots that can safely touch humans.
Other task for possible robots he says include searching or reaching for items.
