Sales of a car, made in West Georgia, posted record sales in October. The Kia Sorento is having a positive impact on the state’s economy.

The Korean auto manufacturer builds the Sorento at their West Point facility. In October more than 10-thousand of the crossover vehicles sold. In the same month the company started up a second shift with 6-hundred additional employees.

Page Estes is with the LaGrange/Troup County Chamber of Commerce. She says the KIA plant has helped them weather the economic downturn better than other parts of the state and potential for future job growth is strong.

“I think it is safe to say that if they were able to add a third line or even a third shift that we could be looking at 25-hundred just within the plant itself.”

In all nearly 2-thousand people work at the Kia plant in West Point. More than 5-thousand additional jobs come from parts suppliers.
