Roy Barnes is watching the results in a hotel room with his wife, Marie. He spoke briefly with reporters and says he is cautiously optimistic about the early returns.

"You know, we'll see... I've been surprised by elections. I've lost elections they've said I was going to win, and I've won elections they've said I was going to lose. So I think the only true poll is the one that comes in when they count the votes."

Barnes says he's still counting on a runoff but he can't be sure until the numbers for Atlanta's DeKalb and Fulton Counties come in.
