On Monday Governor Sonny Perdue signed a bill that could leave Macon without the Sports and Music Halls of Fame.
Senate Bill 523 asks the groups overseeing the two museums to seek proposals for a new location or alternative funding.  The official state museums in Macon, have been unable to support themselves, relying on state funding which is drying up.
Macon Representative Allen Peake says city and county officials are working on funding to keep the museum’s here. He says other cities have expressed interest but so far no way to pay for it.
“There are a lot of folks that say, ‘Yeah, boy we’d love to have them in our community and they belong here…belong there..’ But you know what? At the end of the day they’ve got to put up the money or they need to quit the conversation.”
Peake says it’s going to be a tough battle to keep the museums here and unless local officials come up with a game plan they could be gone in a year.
