A Republican lawmaker wants to legalize betting on horses in Georgia.

State Rep. Henry Geisinger is proposing a constitutional amendment

That would bring horse racing to Georgia. He says it would create badly needed jobs.

Horse racing is very labor intensive, and each horse at a track would generate anywhere from 4 to 7 jobs," Geisinger says. "And the people who need it in the rural areas of Georgia disparately need that."

The idea would need at two thirds majority in both the House and the Senate.

Then it would go before voters in November. The proposal is expected to draw criticism from social conservatives who oppose gambling in Georgia.
