Georgia's number one crop is poised to set a new record as farmers finish up their harvest. Cotton is usually picked by now, but not this year. Farmers planted late due to all the rain. Precipitation has also delayed the harvest.
However, the crop they are picking is going to set a record. For the first time they'll yield over 900 pounds of cotton from each acre. University of Georgia Cotton Economist, Don Shurley says farmers in other states have not been so lucky and that's helped prices go up.
"It's unusual that we would have prices to improve like they have and at the same time in the case of Georgia, have a fantastic crop."
Shurley says 70-percent of Georgia cotton is shipped overseas and demand is up worldwide. Cotton is the state's number one crop with an economic impact of 3-billion dollars a year.
