Taxpayers spent three million dollars defending courthouse shooter Brian Nichols.

Records show the state put up $2.3 million, and Fulton County paid defense attorney Henderson Hill nearly a half-million dollars.

Nichols’ public defense is at the center of calls for reforms to the state’s public defender system and the death penalty.

He was sentenced in December to life without parole for killing four people in March of 2005 in a shooting spree that began at the Fulton County Courthouse.
