Secretary of State Karen Handel had to confirm to an Atlanta television station that she has a high school diploma and not a GED.
The move came after a Wikipedia entry about her on the internet was altered. Supporters of Handel claim that her opponent, John Oxendine, is behind the changes on the open source public encyclopedia. Someone wrote that she had a GED instead of a high school diploma.

Handel supporter and blogger Erick Erickson told WSB Television that he traced the IP address for the entry back to a state office tower. That same address altered Oxendine's Wikipedia page with positive entries. Oxendine's campaign fired back and sent WSB-TV a copy of a sworn affidavit denying the accusations. Oxendine's campaign manager accused Handel’s supporters of initiating a negative attack without offering any evidence.

This isn’t the first time Wikipedia edits have entered a governor’s race. Four years ago, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cathy Cox fired her campaign manager after he altered the Wikipedia entry of her opponent.
