Georgia lawmakers are debating which changes they want to make to the state's gun laws as the General Assembly's annual session heads toward a close. A committee of House lawmakers debated Wednesday on the merits of differing legislative packages from two gun owners groups. The House's Public Safety Committee did not vote on either piece of legislation.

Dallemand made international headlines by instituting universal Mandarin Chinese classes, but promptly disappeared from the public eye after negotiating a six figure contract buyout with the school board.
Gov. Nathan Deal named six new members of the DeKalb County school board Wednesday. The move comes a week after he exercised a relatively new state law to oust six elected members over accusations of financial mismanagement. The six new members include two college professors, a businessman and a planning manager. A nominating panel chose them from a pool of 400 applicants.
A proposal to change Georgia's gun laws would close one loophole potentially allowing mentally ill people to purchase firearms. Still, state judges are concerned the proposal could open another gap allowing mentally ill people to carry guns.
A day after the Georgia NAACP blasted Gov. Nathan Deal for comments about replacing DeKalb County school board members, the Governor returned fire. He said the NAACP was focused solely on the issue of race following his suspension of six members of the majority black board over accusations of financial mismanagement.
