State lawmakers are taking their time with their first opportunity since the Newtown, Conn., gun massacre to debate about weapons in Georgia public schools.
The interim director of the Fulton County elections board has denied allegations that her staff tampered with voter records after the presidential race in November. State investigators last week said a red pen was used to add the names to voter rolls in reverse alphabetical order after poll managers signed off on the documents and delivered them to the county elections office.
Congressman Paul Broun is expected to announce that he's running for the US Senate seat that Saxby Chambliss is giving up. The move by the Athens Republican and others expected to run for the seat could set off a chain reaction down the ballot in 2014. Savannah Republican Jack Kingston also is widely considered to be mulling a run for Chambliss' seat.
Republican lawmakers are pushing a series of bills to make more local elections nonpartisan. Backers told the Senate ethics committee Monday that it would save money by nixing primaries in those races. But others say the move reflects Georgia shifting demographics.
It’s a voting day – again – in parts of Georgia, with runoffs for two General Assembly seats and a special election for another. In the state Senate, voters in eight southwest Georgia counties will choose between Republicans Dean Burke and Mike Keown in a runoff for district 11. The winner will replace Republican John Bulloch.
