The Obamas introduced the world to a new addition to their family Monday - Sunny, a black Portugese Water Dog. First Lady Michelle Obama tweeted the news with a photo last night.

Sunny is a Michigan native and was born June 2012. She fits into the family nicely because like her brother Bo her breed doesn’t agitate people with allergies which the Obama daughters are said to have.

According to the White House blog Sunny will no doubt join Bo in accompanying the President and the first family on long walks after dinner. Plus she may assist with official duties like visiting Walter Reed, checking out the Holiday decorations or frolicking around during the Easter Egg Roll.

But her most important role will apparently be to keep Bo company. Mrs. Obama told reporters that she had to host a doggie play date back in October because Bo “doesn’t have enough dog interaction.”

Here they are playing around on the lawn.

In honor of Sunny, the Obamas have made a donation to the Washington Humane Society.
