Pope’s Sarah Gentry tipped away a conversion pass that would have tied the game to help her team secure a 14-13 win over Allatoona and give the Greyhounds the Flag Football Division 3 championship on Wednesday.

Allatoona scored with 20 seconds left on a 12-yard pass from Maci Strickland to Sophia Settle. On the attempt to tie the game and force overtime, Gentry reached high to deflect the pass and preserve the victory.

It was the first flag football title for Pope (26-2), which defeated Allatoona 40-7 during the regular season. Allatoona finished 22-3.

Pope scored the first points in a 27-yard pass from Riley Bensman to Olivia O’Connor, but Pope took a 7-6 halftime lead on a 22-yard pass from Strickland to Aoife Flynn, with Strickland converting the point.

Pope took a 14-7 lead with 3:55 remaining in the game on an 18-yard pass from Bensman to Carly Oubs, only to have Allatoona drive for the late score.

Bensman completed 17 of 23 passes for 130 yards and two touchdown, with Oubs catching six passe for 29 yards and one touchdown. Laila Nixon led the defense with six tackles.

Strickland completed 20 of 30 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Hazel Shultz had five receptions for 45 yards and Flynn caught three passes for 37 yards. Jasmine Barnes led the defense with seven tackles and two sacks.
