There is obviously a reason a 2017 Prep football game is still a full 48 minutes in length. Some teams seem to forget that their opponents can still score or have a big play with a minimum amount of time left on the game clock.

I can’t remember how many games that I’ve written about this season which have been decided in the last few seconds; but I suspect that there have been more games won and lost in the final few moments of a game than ever before in Georgia Football Prep action. This past week was no exception with some late fireworks which cost some teams a game that looked like a winning effort just moments before.

A few cases in point from last week’s action, Brookwood bested rival Parkview, 30-27. A late field goal with less than 30-seconds remaining did the trick. Region 1-7A rivals Tift County and Colquitt County squared off in Moultrie in a key region matchup. The final score was, 38-35, Tift County. Another late field goal did the trick in this one; but there were less than 10-seconds remaining on the clock when this game was decided.

Field goals were not the only culprit in late game wins last weekend. Marist rallied in the final minute to top Blessed Trinity, 25-24. The War Eagles managed a late touchdown and a two-point conversion to pull victory from the jaws of defeat.

Coffee, now 5-2 on the season, has been the victim of two last-second field goals this season. The Trojans fell to Tift County, 33-31, and Warner Robins, 52-49, on consecutive weeks in September to end the games. This past week however, Coffee managed to stave off Northside-Warner Robins, 14-12, when the Eagles went for the tying two-point conversion with just over a minute left in the game and failed.

Prep Football fans are getting their full game share of action here in 2017 with last-second wins and losses each week all across the State.

In other games of note last weekend, Valdosta downed formerly top-ranked Lee County in Region 1-6A 31-28, Class 4A Burke County topped Region rival Baldwin, 32-14, to set up a showdown with second-ranked Thomson this week for first place in Region 3-4-A. Troup, now 7-1 on the season, fell from the unbeaten ranks when they were upset by Cedartown. Jenkins of Savannah downed Savannah High School 22-21 in Class 3A, and top-ranked Class 2A Benedictine Military rolled past Bacon County 47-13 to move to 8-0 on the season.

Tattnall Square of Macon fell to crosstown rival First Presbyterian 41-35, and ECI downed Johnson County 48-28 in Class A action.

This week’s top games find Lowndes hosting Colquitt County in Region 1-7A, Valdosta visits Coffee in 1-6A, it’s Jones County hosting Stockbridge in Class 5A and Cedartown at Sandy Creek in Class 4A.

Unbeaten Bremen, 8-0 and 7-1, Calhoun square off in Bremen and Dodge County, 8-0 on the year, travels to 6-2, Bleckley County.

Class A’s top matchups have Athens Academy, 8-0, at Commerce, 7-1, and ECI, 7-1 at Jenkins County, 7-1.
