The Georgia Prep Football season is heating up as we head down the home stretch to region championships and second season playoff positions which are just around the corner. Last weekend saw several top matchups, and this week, number nine of the regular season, is no exception.

Last weekend saw some great matchups involving top ten ranked teams, and there were a few upsets tossed in for good measure. In Class 7-A, there were two battles in separate parts of the state, which signaled that there will be some classic matchups in the state’s largest division before the Title Trophy is awarded in early December in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Unbeaten Grayson, number- one ranked in most polls around the state, fell to fourth-ranked Archer, 6-3. The game was a splendid defensive struggle by two great high school football teams, who will both surely make a lot of noise in the 7-A statewide playoffs. Meanwhile, in the southern portion of the state, undefeated Lowndes, the state’s highest scoring team, outlasted unbeaten Tift County, 52-38, in an offensive showdown at Brodie Field in Tifton. Those two teams swapped touchdowns throughout the game until a late score by the Vikings, salted the game away.

In Region 1-6-A, top-ranked Lee County edged Northside-Warner Robins 16-13, to take the early lead in that tough region. The Coffee High Trojans of Douglas topped Houston County, 35-0, to move into a first place tie with the Leesburg Trojans. Valdosta took the week off to prepare for their stretch run, which begins this week in earnest. The Class 6-A defending champion Wildcats are 2-5 on the season, with three region games to play.

It’s pedal to the metal for all teams across the state this week, regardless of classification. Three weeks remain for teams to make their run to the playoffs or hope for better days next season. Bracketology Friday, November 3rd, is almost here.

There are big games in all classifications this week. In Class 7-A, Walton is at Lassiter, Mill Creek is at Mountain View, South Forsyth takes on North Forsyth and down south in Region one, top-ranked Lowndes travels to play at dangerous Camden County and Tift County travels to Moultrie to meet the Colquitt County Packers.

In Class 6-A, top-ranked Lee County is at Valdosta, Harrison is on the road to Dalton and Northside-Warner Robins tries to rebound from last week’s heart-breaking loss to Lee County with a visit to Coffee in Douglas.

Class 5-A’s top matchups find the top-ranked Rome Wolves at Villa Rica, Kell at Carrollton and Thomas County Central at Bainbridge. In Class 4-A, Marist is at Blessed Trinity, Pickens plays at Ridgeland, Baldwin plays Burke County in Waynesboro and Mary Persons hosts West Laurens.

Class 3-A has a couple of interesting, playoff implication matches, scheduled this week as well. Savanah High plays cross town rival Jenkins and Westminster meets long-time foe Lovett.

In Class AA, Hapeville Charter Hosts Douglass, Temple is at Callaway, Rabun County travels to meet Elbert County in the Granite Bowl, and in Region One down south it’s Fitzgerald at Brooks County in Quitman.

Class single A’s top games have Athens Academy at George Walton, ECI at Johnson County and Aquinas of Augusta at Washington-Wilkes.
