Rush Propst the head coach of the two time defending GHSA 6A champion Colquitt County Packers has been suspended for one year by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for a head-butt incident  during the 6A semifinal game at Mill Creek last December.

Propst has appealed the suspension and continues to prepare his team for the upcoming 2016 season.

It is not known who lodged the complaint  or how long the appeals process will take.

Those are the bare bones facts of what is going on.  The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has a lot of what is called “Juice”.  The GPSC is the most powerful body in the teaching community as it determines who is qualified and certified to teach in Georgia schools.  The GPSC regulates the teaching community much like the Georgia Bar Association regulates lawyers or the Georgia Medical Board evaluates doctors.

I talked with one Class 7A head coach  who said that “it certainly did not look like he was trying to hurt the kid.  The kid was not hurt.  Usually if it’s a situation where there is ‘inappropriate contact’ of some kind, the school itself will step in and administer the punishment.”    Here is the video of what happened on the Colquitt County sideline.

I talked with Colquitt County athletic director Greg Tillery this morning who told me “ We are not commenting at this time. We will have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out.”

There have been occasions when the appeals process has taken a couple of years to play out.  That being the case there is no time table for this to be resolved.  Coach Propst will continue getting his team ready for the Packers season opener against those same Mill Creek Hawks on August 20th at the Georgia Dome and the rest of the season which includes   the September 9th 6A Championship rematch against the Roswell Hornets which will air on GPB.
